The HR 5767 bill is finally at the markup stage

The HR 5767, the bill that places enforcement on the UIGEA (Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act via banking regulations) has finally moved to its markup stage, where the bill can finally be discussed on improvements to the legislation.

Unlike other bills and different laws, the HR 5767 is one of many who are closed watched by a lot of people in the online poker industry. The bill, which places enforcement on the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act, might have a slim shot of getting online poker to be legalized.

If and only if the bill clears the house in vote, it will need a lot of nation wise marketing and steam to make sure that at least 60 Senators will sign it, and than it will have to move up to the President to sign the new law.

In its current form, the HR 5767 bill, would prohibit the Treasury Department and Federal Reserve from "proposing, prescribing or even implementing" any regulations under the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act that are operating today. "If enacted, the bill would strip the UIGEA of any practical effect on Wire Act that kept so many companies from running online poker sites" Some also say that passing the bill might also help clearing up all the mess that the UIGEA had created regarding the Horse Racing industry.

If the bill does get beyond the mark-up stage, and maybe even voted by 60 or more senators, will it mean that the online poker industry and the ones that are working behind the scenes (players, senators, voters) can actually start thinking about repealing the UIGEA?, or at least try to insert more 'must pass' bills into the Congress?. Though we never know, we just have to hope that this time, there will be more supporters at the Congress, unlike the last time where almost 317 of senators actually supported the UIGEA and caused a world wide shock in the gambling industry.

One thing for sure though, the HR 5767 bill has gained two new cosponsors: Rep. Neil Abercrombie, D-Hawaii and Rep. Stephen Lynch, D-Mass. You never know which ones are next, and for online poker sites, the more the merrier.
